BARSTOW — A commercial structure fire destroyed the old Katz Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge early Friday morning, authorities said.

Reported at 2:07 a.m. in the 100 block of W. Main St. across from Barstow Tire & Brake, the blaze gutted the building.

Barstow Police Department Captain Andrew Espinoza told the Daily Press that suspicious circumstances have led authorities to investigate the fire as a possible arson.

While no injuries have been reported, Espinoza said authorities are "still sifting through the bottom floor of the building."

West Main Street is closed between First and May avenues and Espinoza said authorities hope to have it reopened by Friday afternoon.

Barstow Fire Protection District Chief Jamie Williams told the Daily Press that 21 fire personnel responded to battle the blaze and it took 90 minutes to get the fire under control with assistance from the Marine Corps Logistic Base Fire Department, Apple Valley Fire Protection District, San Bernardino County Fire Department and Ft. Irwin Fire Department.
