BARSTOW — Police here arrested two teenagers who were reportedly trespassing at a local elementary school with guns late Wednesday.

Barstow Police Department officers arrested a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy after responding to reports of subjects trespassing at Cameron Elementary School in the 800 block of Muriel Drive just before 8:30 p.m.. The pair were eventually found on Carson Street and a loaded .38-caliber revolver pistol was found in a backpack, police said.

Officer Michael Cardenas first searched the school after receiving reports of subjects in dark clothing who had jumped the fence and were walking around the school. During the search, dispatch received a second call advising that the teenagers were now headed east on Carson Street, where Cardenas made contact with them.

Police said Cardenas learned that one of the teenagers was on formal probation, prompting a search of the boy’s backpack where the pistol was found. Both teenagers claimed possession of the firearm, saying they needed it “for protection,” police said.

The boys were arrested on suspicion of being a minor in possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon. They were booked into the High Desert Juvenile Detention.
