NEWBERRY SPRINGS — Authorities said two people died and two others were injured in a rollover crash on Interstate 15 early Monday morning.

California Highway Patrol officials said the crash, which occurred on northbound I-15 north of Minneola Road, involved an Audi and a Lexus, both headed north on the freeway at 6:39 a.m. Monday.

According to CHP officials, the Lexus was headed north “slightly ahead of the Audi” in the No. 2 lane when, for unknown reasons, the Audi changed lanes from the No. 1 lane into the No. 2.

“The right front of the Audi collided into the left rear of the Lexus,” CHP officials said, “causing the Lexus to lose control and overturn into the desert east of the freeway.”

The driver and front passenger of the Lexus, both 48 years old and from La Palma, died of their injuries from the crash, CHP officials said.

Both rear passengers from the Lexus suffered moderate to major injuries and were airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment. Further details on their condition weren’t available Monday. The persons in the Audi were uninjured, officials said.

CHP officials said alcohol or drugs don’t appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
