Raymond L. Haight III, presiding judge of the San Bernardino County Superior Court, announced late Wednesday night that the Barstow District courthouse would be closed Thursday and Friday after the complete failure of the building's air conditioning system.

With temperatures in Barstow topping 110 degrees all week, the failure of the air conditioning system made conducting business in the courthouse perilous.

In his order, Haight said all matters scheduled to be heard on Thursday and Friday in the Barstow District courthouse would be transferred to the Victorville District courthouse so as to be heard on their originally scheduled day.

Haight said court officials expect the Barstow District courthouse to reopen on Monday, resume its normal operations and hear its Monday calendar as usual.

Thursday's closure caught some citizens by surprise, however. Several people were seen at the courthouse Thursday morning reading the notice about the closure posted on the door.
