BARSTOW — Discover the desert with mural tours, live animals, craft programs and more at the sixth annual Mid Summer Arts Festival on Saturday.

The Desert Discovery Center holds this event every year to embrace the growing arts culture in the Barstow area while inviting members of the community to learn more about the desert they live in.

The Mid Summer Arts festival will begin at 10 a.m. with the first and only Route 66 mural tour of the day beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The art show will contain various types of work from adults. There is a separate art show for children. There will be awards given in the following categories: watercolor, acrylic, oil, mixed media and photography.

“This is also a way for the local artists to have their artwork showcased,” Desert Discovery Center Director Jane Laraman-Brockhurst said. “We have youngsters that are participating all the way up senior folks.”

Attendees can take a look at the unique handmade craft booths and also learn how to replicate the boards, cards, jewelry and other art at home. Arts and crafts activities also will be available for children.

“(The hosts) will be sharing their work but also demonstrating their creative process,” Brockhurst said.

There will be live entertainment throughout the event, followed by a dance performance from Studio M Dance Company.

“It’s just great to host an event that celebrates the arts in the Barstow Community,” Brockhurst said.

As a way of “Celebrating the Wonder of the California Desert,” there will be an assortment of reptiles present, from commonly seen lizards to snakes, tortoises, spiders and more that can found throughout our local environment.

“This is our way to host an event to invite people from the community to show them the creative opportunities in the community,” Brockhurst said.

There will be quick draw prizes throughout the day with the event ending at 3 p.m. The Desert Discovery Center is located at 831 Barstow Road in Barstow. For more information, call the center at 760-252-6060.
