SAN BERNARDINO — The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors recently increased the total contract with Callison Construction from $85,500 to $108,000, due to unforeseen issues for the Barstow Library American with Disabilities Act (ADA) Restroom Remodel Project.  This amendment also extends the construction completion date to June 20.

“Original as-built drawings of the building were not available and no environmental testing or deconstructive surveys were performed during the design phase,” the county staff report said. Lead-containing materials were also discovered.

These unforeseen conditions will be addressed with the installation of new electrical distribution, relocation and addition of a new air duct, additional concrete for plumbing waste line relocation and removal and disposal of lead-containing materials.

“The layout of the restrooms was redesigned by relocating the fixtures to avoid the majority of the unforeseen conditions and still making it ADA compliant,” according to the county staff report.

The ADA requires public accommodations to remove barriers in existing buildings where it is easy to do so without much difficulty or expense.

“The Barstow Library ADA Restroom Remodel Project remodels two existing public restrooms, bringing the building up to code and providing accessibility for both the public and staff at this location,” said the county staff report.
