The Diocese of San Bernardino is holding its Annual Diocesan Award Ceremony on Friday, where Deacon Don Burgett is set to receive the Our Lady of Guadalupe Award.

Over the years, Burgett has been very involved in the community, thanks in large part to his former job as a Barstow Fire Protection District battalion chief and his involvement with the Barstow Unified School District, as well.

Burgett became involved with the Barstow Unified School District during the 1970s, serving three terms as the district's president and a trustee.

It was later on in the 1980s when Burgett joined the Barstow Fire Protection District, where he spent three terms as a chairman and board director.

Burgett was also the pyrotechnician for the Barstow Fire Protection District, putting him in charge of the Fourth of July fireworks show in Barstow for 25 years.

But Burgett's accomplishments within the church have been just as impressive. After being ordained on Sept. 15, 1990 by Bishop Most Reverend Philip F. Straling, Burgett was awarded an Apostolic Blessing from Pope Francis in 2015 on his 25th anniversary as deacon.

On Friday, Bishop Most Reverend Gerald R. Barnes will bestow the Our Lady of Guadalupe Award upon Burgett on behalf of the Diocese of San Bernardino.

To receive the award, individuals must demonstrate generosity, leadership and kind service beyond the parish for the common good of the diocese and local civic communities.

The annual Diocesan Award Ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. and will be located at Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral, 2525 Arrowhead Ave. in San Bernardino.
