BARSTOW — A Barstow man accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl he met in Victorville is expected to appear before a judge Monday if criminally charged by prosecutors.
Barstow police arrested Johnathan Williams Griggs, 38, on suspicion of rape of a drugged victim and oral copulation of a minor after he was found hiding in the bathroom of a home in the 1900 block of Yosemite Court on Thursday afternoon.
Barstow police received a tip that Griggs was in the area, responded to Yosemite Court and saw him enter a parked vehicle.
“The vehicle began leaving the area with Griggs inside, however, the vehicle suddenly stopped and Griggs immediately exited the vehicle and ran inside of a residence,” police said in a statement. “The detectives made contact with the resident and conducted a search for Griggs. Detectives located Griggs hiding in the bathroom. Detectives placed Griggs under arrest and transported him to the detective division for further investigation.”
Griggs was wanted in connection to the sexual assault that occurred on March 28.
Police responded to the 300 block of West Main Street regarding a girl reporting that she was sexually assaulted. The girl claims she was drugged and raped by Griggs, who she had met in Victorville.
Police said Griggs brought the victim to Barstow on March 27 and coerced “her into using illicit drugs and then sexually assaulted her.”
“The victim reported that Griggs then instructed her to prostitute herself in order to make money for him,” police said. “The victim stated that when Griggs sent her to do this and allowed her to walk away she was able to get to a safe location and call the police.”
Detectives and evidence technicians responded to where the sexual assault occurred and processed the scene. Detective Peter D’Andrea’s investigation revealed further evidence corroborating the victim’s statement, police said.
The girl also identified Griggs as the suspect from a photographic lineup.
Court records show Griggs has a lengthy criminal background dating back to 1999, including several drug-related convictions.
Griggs was being held on $250,000 bail at High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto, booking records show.
