BARSTOW — Authorities arrested a 23-year-old Barstow man on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm or by means of force likely to cause great bodily harm after responding to the 36000 block of Hayward Avenue after receiving reports of a stabbing.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested Alexander Monahan at Barstow Community Hospital after he was treated for a leg wound. Deputies said he suffered the injury after he attacked the victim.

Sheriff’s officials said deputies arrived at the home a little after 9 a.m. and found two people with knife wounds.

Deputy Randy Duran learned an argument had taken place and Monahan became “physical” and attacked the victim.

“At one point, the victim armed (himself) with a knife and the two struggled over it,” sheriff’s officials said. “Both subjects received serious injuries and cuts while fighting over the knife. The victim drove to a nearby Urgent Care for sutures.”

Monahan was being held at High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto in lieu of $50,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned in a Victorville courtroom Monday afternoon if criminally charged by prosecutors, booking records show.
