BARSTOW — Authorities said two dogs died in a fire that tore through a home early Thursday morning.
Reports of a structure fire at a home near Armory and Higgins roads were received around 8:45 p.m. Thursday. While the cause is still being investigated, the blaze was “suspicious in nature”, Barstow Fire Protection District Interim Chief Jamie Williams said.
“We initially got reports that there might have been someone inside, but after a primary check it was determined no one was in the home,” Williams said. “However, we found two dogs that didn’t make it.”
The flames first erupted in the home’s garage before spreading into the attic. While firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading further, about 50 percent of the home was fully engulfed, Williams said.
Firefighters got the flames under control within 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.
Williams didn’t provide more details on the “suspicious nature” of the blaze on Thursday, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Barstow Fire Protection District.
