BARSTOW — People, businesses and organizations will be recognized for their hard work and contributions to the community on Saturday night as the annual Barstow Community Recognition Awards returns for the 36th year.

The Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce has held the event each year to recognize industrious workers, military personnel and students who have done well.

There are eight awards categories: Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Man of Continuous Service, Woman of Continuous Service, Business of the Year, Organization of the Year, Event of the Year and Up & Coming Volunteer.

“They are a lot of people who work behind the scenes, so I think it’s a great opportunity for these people to receive recognition,” Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Eugene Butticci said.

People within the Barstow area began submitting their nominations last August. Nominations stopped being accepted on Jan. 15.

A voting committee composed of past award winners and chamber membership selected select one person from each category. Those selected will be showcased on stage while receiving their awards.

Once an individual has received an award they can no longer receive it again. However, businesses and organizations are excluded from that rule. After winning an award, individuals are allowed to join the voting committee if they wish.

The hosts for the evening will be Bartow’s own 2008 Miss California USA Raquel Beezley along with comedian Scott Fig.

The award ceremony will be held at the Barstow Community College Performing Arts Center just as it was last year. Before that, it was a staple at the Cora Harper Community Center for 34 years.

“It is a much more professional setting and it’s a wonderful facility,” Butticci said. “For the Barstow area you cannot top this.”

The 36th annual Barstow Community Recognition Awards will begin with social hour at 5:30 p.m. and the ceremony will start at 7 p.m. The Barstow Community College Performing Arts Center is at 2700 Barstow Road, Barstow. General admission is $35 at the door. For more information and for tickets, visit
