Caltrans has issued two weekend travel warnings, one for Riverside and the other for Arizona.

Emergency repairs are required to a bridge expansion joint on southbound Interstate 215 at Central Avenue in Riverside, Caltrans said.

Maintenance crews will make the repairs between 3 a.m. and noon Sunday, but while they are working the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 lanes will be closed from University Avenue to Central Avenue. Only the HOV lane and the No. 1 lane will be open during this time (and the HOV lane will be open to all motorists, even those driving alone), so motorists are advised to expect delays and are encouraged to find alternate routes.

Speeds will be reduced through the construction zone and motorists are urged to merge early on.

If you must use the southbound 215 through Riverside during this time, also be advised that Caltrans plans to close the on- and off-ramps at Central Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, as well as the on-ramp at University Avenue. All closures will be from 3 a.m. to noon Sunday.

Meanwhile, area residents who plan to visit Phoenix this weekend should expect delays on westbound Interstate 10 from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, Caltrans said.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) issued a news release about construction in the West Valley area of Phoenix. ADOT said drivers should allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes as westbound lanes on I-10 will be closed between 51st and 75th avenues to prepare for construction of a Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway interchange.

Traffic is expected to be heavy and westbound I-10 on-ramps at 35th and 43rd avenues also will be closed.

According to ADOT, westbound I-10 traffic will be rerouted along McDowell Road, just north of I-10. Drivers should expect traffic congestion on roads closest to I-10.

Motorists should consider other freeways, including the Loop 101 west of I-17, ADOT officials said. Motorists not needing to travel through Phoenix on I-10 should consider taking Interstate 8 and State Route 85 to connect back to westbound I-10.

ADOT also advised that eastbound I-10 — toward downtown Phoenix — will be closed between 75th and 51st avenues from 10 p.m. Feb. 17 to 5 a.m. Feb. 20. Eastbound I-10 on-ramps at 91st, 83rd and 79th avenues also will be closed.
