BARSTOW — The first in a series of Route 66 corridor monument signs is now under construction at First Avenue and Main Street.
The City Council in July approved the appropriation of $42,860 from Measure I funds for Route 66 project signage. The signs are part of plan to rejuvenate the city's Route 66 corridor and downtown.
The contract was awarded to Turner Signs and Graphics located in Laguna Niguel. The Council also approved the overall signage project budget of $111,360.
The monument signs that will be placed along the Route 66 corridor incorporate different vehicles popular on Route 66 during the 1950s through the 1970s and will be placed on a masonry base.
Each sign will have the Route 66 logo as well as Barstow identification. The signs will light up using solar energy.
