BARSTOW — Authorities on Monday identified a 53-year-old man who died after he was transported to Barstow Community Hospital after suffering burn and smoke inhalation injuries in a fire Saturday morning.

San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner officials said Joseph Frank Lucero, of Barstow, was pronounced dead inside the BCH emergency room at approximately 10:58 a.m.

Barstow Fire Protection District personnel responded to a fire at the Santa Fe Communities Mobile Home Park, 1525 W. Main St., at 10:05 a.m.

Authorities said firefighters received reports of the fire inside apartment K with two people trapped. Lucero was the only person trapped inside and was rescued from the apartment by Capt. Nick DiNapoli and firefighter/paramedic Zachary Courtney.

Firefighters knocked down the blaze and contained it to the lone apartment.

A neighbor attempted to rescue Lucero but was overcome by the smoke, was unable to make the save and jumped out the window, authorities said.

Barstow Police Department, BFPD and the Sheriff's Arson Bomb Division are conducting an investigation, authorities said.
