NEWBERRY SPRINGS — A 29-year-old man was behind bars in lieu of $1 million bail after authorities say he stabbed a 28-year-old victim who was paying for gas at Kelley’s Market & Truck Stop in Newberry Springs and then stole a vehicle on Saturday.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol officers responded to the business Saturday morning and began searching for the stolen car and suspect.

The victim was transported to the hospital and was reported in stable condition.

The vehicle, which “automatically shut off,” and suspect, identified as Raymond Leroy Adams, were found near Daggett stopped on the side of the road, authorities said.

Witnesses positively identified Adams as the suspect who stabbed and punched the victim multiple times.

“While the victim was paying for his gas the suspect, Adams, who is known by the victim, approached the victim from behind. The suspect stabbed the victim and then began punching the victim multiple times,” sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

Deputies arrested Adams on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm or by means of force likely to cause great bodily harm and carjacking.

Authorities say Adams is a Barstow resident but booking records show he is from Hacienda Heights.

Adams was being held at High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto and is expected to be arraigned in a Victorville courtroom Tuesday afternoon if criminally charged by prosecutors, booking records show.
