Government report: Senate committee approves Gold Star license plates

A State Senate committee approved legislation this past week which would create a license plate for those who have lost family members in war.

The Senate Transportation and Housing Committee voted 9-0 to approve the Gold Star Family license plates, according to a release from theCalifornia Department of Veterans Affairs. This legislation will allow family members of a service member who was killed while serving on active duty in the military to apply for a special license plate with a design containing the words “Gold Star Family.”

City Council to begin search for finance director, city engineer

During the Barstow City Council meeting to be held Monday night, the council will vote on whether to approve a consultant to perform a job search to fill the vacant finance director and city engineer positions.

Gil Olvarez, the former finance director, and Michael Stewart, the former city engineer, recently left the city.

Another contract with a consultant to prepare plans for the first phase of improvements to wastewater treatment plant will be considered.
The council will also vote on the purchase of two new utility vehicles, infield mix for the Robert A. Sessions Sportspark, and the pulverization of Riverside Drive.

The Redevelopment Agency will also meet on Monday. Both the RDA and the City Council meet in the council chambers at City Hall, 220 E. Mountain View. The RDA meets at 7 p.m. with the council meeting to follow at 7:30. Regularly scheduled meetings are televised live on Time Warner Cable channel 6 and recordings are placed on the city’s Web site, www.barstowca.org.

Silver Valley board holds special meeting

The Silver Valley Unified School District will hold a special board meeting on Monday. The board will consider, in closed session, the expulsion of five students. The SVUSD board will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday at the district board offices at 35320 Daggett Yermo Road in Yermo.
