BARSTOW • A Barstow man was charged and arrested for sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl, according to a police press release Thursday.
Raymond Hernandez, 71, was arrested Wednesday without incident and booked at the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department Barstow jail after he confessed to police that he, a friend of the girl’s family, inappropriately touched the child, police said.
On Sunday at approximately 9:04 p.m., Barstow Police received a call of a possible sexual assault to a child. Officer Pete D’Andrea responded to Barstow Community Hospital and spoke with the mother and the 5-year-old victim, according to the press release.
Barstow Police responded to assist in the investigation. It was determined that the crime of lewd acts with a child was committed at a home in the 500 block of Clark Street, with the suspect identified as Hernandez.
Hernandez was reportedly visiting the family at their home late in the afternoon Sunday. The victim’s father went to look for his daughter and found her alone in a room with Hernandez, who reportedly had his belt unbuckled with the victim seated next to him.
After Hernandez was confronted by the victim’s father, told to leave the residence and did so, the victim told her father that Hernandez had touched her genital area.
On Wednesday at approximately 11 a.m., Detective Daniel Arthur contacted Hernandez at his home for additional investigation. This is when police say Hernandez admitted to the crimes and also to the crime of oral copulation against the victim.
This investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact D’Andrea or Arthur at the Barstow Police Department at (760) 256-2211. Callers who wish to remain anonymous may contact the WeTip Hotline at (800) 78-CRIME.
