BARSTOW • Veterans Day is a special day at the Barstow Veterans Home with most of the residents in house for the holiday, unique services given to recognize the residents, and special meals served at lunch and dinner.
But this year organizers found funding for the day’s special meals harder to come by, with regular donor AmVets being unable to give.
“We are on a budget because of state constraints,” food manager at the home Anthony Saldana said.
“Because of this donation its lifted a heavy burden and it’s allowing us not to scrounge around and try to scrape funds together.”
Private donations are helping out.
“It’s appreciated very much,” resident and World War II Navy veteran Robert McCulay said.
According to Veterans home kitchen staff, the special lunch meal will consist of shrimp cocktail, Cornish game hen, scallops, prime rib and vegetables.
“I’m really looking forward to prime rib,” Army veteran Mary Timm said. “A good cut of meat would be just fabulous.”
