Aztecs wrestle to DSL win
BARSTOW • The Barstow wrestling team won its first Desert Sky League match of the season, handily defeating Burroughs, 61-18, on Wednesday night.
It was the last time the two schools will meet as league rivals, as the Burros will be leaving the DSL after this year.
As the final score indicates, it was a match the Aztecs dominated, taking eight wins by pin. Pinning their opponents were Barstow’s Jose Rubio Jr. (113 pounds), Dallas Hawes (120 pounds), Ryan Barela (132 pounds), Cody Perez (138 pounds), Gabe Rodriguez (145 pounds), Julian Aguayo (152 pounds), John Wright (160 pounds), and Kiler Holmeyer (heavyweight).
There were three other Aztec wins, as Dominic Robles won by major decision, 14-1, at 126-pounds; at 182-pounds, Arthur Ramirez won by a 5-2 decision; and Adam Valdez won by forfeit at 106-pounds.
“I told the kids that the dedication they’ve shown in practice is really paying off in matches like these,” said Barstow head coach Sam Barnhart. “With all those pins, we were pretty dominant.”
The DSL schedule continues on Monday, when the Aztecs visit Granite Hills. Next Wednesday is Senior Night, with the Aztec seniors and others being recognized before the 6 p.m. start against Victor Valley.
