Lady Aztecs swept by Silverado
BARSTOW • The Barstow volleyball team has the skills. The problem lies elsewhere, according to head coach Brooke Verrill.
“My team is very mental,” she said after the Lady Aztecs’ latest match. “They focus on their mistakes and it’s like they can’t get it out of their heads, and it snowballs.”
Barstow hosted Silverado on Tuesday and lost in three games. The Lady Hawks won by scores of 25-23, 25-14, 25-19.
Though the first game ended with the closest score, it was a tough one for the home team. The Lady Aztecs staked themselves to an early lead behind kills from Tiare Alefaio and Maxine Cooks, and aces from Heather Verrill and Jean Letuli to build up a 17-10 edge. Then some long hits and serves brought the score closer until the Hawks made up the lost ground and won by two.
“Sometimes I can see the mental breakdown and there’s nothing I can do,” said coach Verrill. “We talk before the matches about visualizing a win and we’ve been doing mental drills; it’s been working, but when we start to get frustrated sometimes we can’t shake it.”
The last two games featured kills from Marisol Wulleumier, Verrill and Cooks, and another ace from Letuli. The Lady Aztecs were competitive in both games, but the Hawks held leads of a few points steadily in each.
Cooks finished with six kills, six digs and two blocks, while Verrill had four kills and two blocks. Chelsea Phillips had six kills and six digs, and Breanna Low six assists.
It’s basically the mental part of the game coach Verrill feels she has to stress for the remainder of the season. Her players are pretty solid on the physical part.
“We’ll continue to work on it,” she said. “It’s hard to fight the other team while we fight ourselves. Silverado is a good team, but again tonight, I felt we beat ourselves as much as they beat us.”
The Lady Aztecs will host Burroughs next Tuesday at 5 p.m.
