Burroughs sweeps Lady Aztecs
RIDGECREST • The Barstow volleyball team was swept by Burroughs in its latest match, 3-0, on Thursday in Ridgecrest.
The first two games came down to the wire, as the Burros won game one, 25-21, while game two was even closer, 25-23.
“The team is improving,” said Lady Aztecs head coach Brooke Verrill. “We were missing four players tonight and it was still a close match.”
There were two players sitting out with the flu and another was on a college visit. Hannah Crumley, who was injured in Tuesday’s match, sat as a precaution.
One of the big problems for Barstow was handling the Burros’ Chantia Jennings. Jennings has a hard serve that the Lady Aztecs had trouble handling.
“We couldn’t return her serve. I made all the adjustments I could possibly make,” said Verrill.
Breanna Low finished with 10 digs and two kills, while Maxine Cooks had seven kills and an ace. Heather Verrill had eight kills, Marissa Keeton eight assists, and Tiare Alefaio five assists.
“We still need higher numbers to win,” coach Verrill said. “We have a solid offense, but not good enough passing. We kept the serving errors down tonight, but we had 19 serve/receive errors. We’re improving, but it will be back to the basics tomorrow in practice.”
Barstow will play at Victor Valley on Tuesday.
