Stolen truck suspect in custody after chase
BARSTOW • A Barstow man wanted for vehicle theft is in custody after police say he attempted to elude them in an off-road vehicle for the second time in a week.
Joseph Trexler, 33, was arrested Thursday behind a residence on Colby Avenue in Irwin Estates. The arrest came after a chase that began with a report of a hit and run near Interstate 40 and East Main Street, authorities said.
A person reported at approximately 3 p.m. that their vehicle had just been struck by a black Ford F150 with a white quad ATV in the bed of the truck, according to a Barstow Police Department news release.
The person told police the driver drove off after the crash. Police said they recognized the description of the vehicle to be one associated with Trexler.
After responding to the scene, Barstow Police Officer Michael Cardenas located the suspect on the ATV fleeing from the area of the Colonial Trailer Park on the 2300 block of East Main Street, according to the news release.
Police pursued the suspect on surface streets while he traveled the river bottom toward the First Street Bridge before entering onto Irwin Road and eventually the desert area near Robbins Road, according to the news release.
The suspect was moving at a high rate of speed, authorities said.
After the suspect abandoned the ATV, he tried to escape on foot, according to the news release.
Barstow Police and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies had began to establish a perimeter when Deputy Cody Korkotsakis spotted the suspect hiding behind the residence.
Further investigation revealed that the F150 truck had been reported stolen Aug. 30 in Laughlin, authorities said.
Trexler allegedly fled police in similar fashion one week prior first in a reported stolen white Chevrolet pickup and then on a dirt bike which had been in the bed of the truck. Authorities eventually called off that pursuit in a desert area east of the Barstow Water Reclamation Plant and north of I-40.
Police said last week following the incident they located a large amount of suspected methamphetamine thrown out by the suspect during that chase.
Trexler is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at the Victorville courthouse, court records show. He could face charges which include evading police on a motorcycle, grand theft auto, possession of a controlled substance and violating the terms of his probation.
Trexler is currently on probation for vehicle theft and wanted on a warrant issued in July for violating those terms, police said last week.
His bail is set at $100,000, according to court records.
The victim in the hit and run on Thursday sustained minor injuries, according to the news release.
