Storms knock out power locally
Edison working to restore electricity for 500 in Barstow
BARSTOW • Officials sought Monday evening to restore power for approximately 500 Barstow residents affected by a mid-day storm which brought lightning and thunder to area skies.
“Our crews are working around the clock,” said David Song, a Southern California Edison spokesman. An estimated time of restoration was not known as of 6 p.m.
Song urged locals to call authorities to report downed power lines.
A similar storm on Sunday caused a power outage at Fort Irwin and forced the Silver Valley Unified School District to close all schools Monday.
Power at Fort Irwin was eventually restored Monday at approximately 11:30 a.m. — nearly 20 hours after it went out, according to Fort Irwin’s Director of Public Affairs Pamela Portland.
Portland said the installation lost power Sunday at 3:43 p.m. after two power lines went down approximately three miles west of Interstate 15.
Using back-up generators, emergency centers were set-up at the installation during the outage to help families cope with high temperatures.
“We’ve set up two ice stations where people can pick up ice and take it home for their food,” Portland said, moments before word arrived that power had been restored.
“We set up a cooling station where families can come and cool off and just get out of the heat,” she added. “They can recharge cell phones. We set up some cots so some of the families (wanting to) can sleep in there. They can take their kids down there and play some games, so that they don’t have to be in the house.”
Portland said key facilities, such as base headquarters, the shoppette and the gas station, were all in service during the outage using back-up generators.
Schools in the Silver Valley Unified School District, which include Fort Irwin schools, were closed Monday because of the outage.
SVUSD Superintendent Marc Jackson said it would have been “unbearable” for students to attend classes with an expected high Monday of 97 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
SVUSD schools were expected to reopen Tuesday, Jackson said.
