A healthy start

Bryan Spitzer comforts his 3-month-old daughter Joslynn as nurses Hugo Cortez and Maribel Guzman give her a round of immunizations at the Kid’s Care Fair Saturday.

Joslynn had received six different immunizations, Spitzer said. Spitzer did his best to keep her still as Guzman prepared a seventh shot.

This is the Kid’s Care Fair’s 14th year of preparing children and their families for the new school year. Parents led their kids around the Cora Harper Fitness Center’s gym, getting their vision, hearing, height, weight and blood pressure screened.

The California Highway Patrol was in the parking lot checking parents’ car seats. Sgt. Tim Heiden of the Barstow Police Department was also at the health fair, giving away DNA kits, which are more effective than fingerprints when trying to locate a missing child, he said.
