Two in custody after high-speed pursuit
BARSTOW • Authorities apprehended a man and a woman Monday evening following a high-speed pursuit along Highway 58, which began well northwest of Barstow.
The reason for the chase remained murky late Monday, although a police dispatcher said that Bay Area authorities may have sought one of the persons for suspicion of a violent crime.
The pursuit came to an end near the transition of Highway 58 into Interstate 15 at roughly 5:30 p.m. after California Highway Patrol deployed two spike strips, according to Barstow CHP Officer Don Spiker.
The man and woman were then caught following a brief foot chase, Spiker said.
No injuries were reported, however, the chase reached dangerous speeds upward of 130 mph as the suspect vehicle — possibly a rented Hyundai Sonota — veered at times onto the shoulder and into oncoming traffic, according to scanner traffic.
Barstow California Highway Patrol assumed the chase near Kramer Junction sometime around 5 p.m. A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s helicopter was also involved in the pursuit.
More information was expected Tuesday.
