Midnight Special Race this weekend
BARSTOW • Fans of off-road racing will be getting together near Barstow this weekend.
M.O.R.E., Mojave Off-Road Racing Enthusiasts, is teaming up with S.N.O.R.E., out of Southern Nevada, to stage the Midnight Special Race. The race itself will be held in Lucerne Valley off Camp Rock Road, but pre-race tech and contingency will take place at Slash X on Barstow Road.
Slash X will be hosting the drivers for tech and contingency from 2-9 p.m. today. In attendance will be former off-road racer Nathan Ellis, of G-Out Racing. Ellis will have a booth promoting off-road racing and selling t-shirts.
Ellis raced for about 10 years, but these days is more of a spectator. He sometimes helps out his brother, Wayne, who still races, as part of the crew or as a co-rider. He started G-Out Racing, which promotes off-road racing, about a year ago.
“This is my first large event,” Ellis said of bringing G-Out to the Midnight Special. “I’m able to do it with the help of 14 local businesses who signed up as sponsors.”
A percentage of the proceeds from the t-shirts will go toward prize money for the first-place finishers in five different classes.
There are many local drivers who will be taking part in the Midnight Special, including Cody Jeffers (Class 1), Shane Brown (Class 1000), Matt Depue (Class 1600), Wayne Ellis (Class 1400), Ricky Johnson (Class 1496), and Mike Brown, Brandon Heald, Harley Young and Nate Himmelrick (Class 900).
The race will start on Saturday at 3 p.m., and will continue until midnight. In keeping with the night time tradition, there will be a special $1,000 bonus for the first finisher with KC lights. An awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, starting at 9 a.m.
