Close win for girls soccer
BARSTOW • The Barstow girls soccer team pulled out a 4-3 win over Burroughs on Tuesday.
It was a game in which the home team took an early lead, then had to scramble as the Lady Burros got back into it. Barstow jumped out to a 3-0 edge in the first minutes of the match, getting its first goal just four minutes in by Nayeli Zapata. Four minutes later, Alysia Sanchez connected, and when Burroughs was whistled for a foul in the box, Lexyss Aviles made good on a penalty kick, and Barstow had a quick, 3-0 lead.
“We controlled the first 19 minutes, then got too relaxed and careless,” said Lady Aztecs head coach Frank Maldonado. “It was a hard-fought, physical game.”
As the first ticked down, the Lady Burros scored twice, both goals coming from Madison Schiller, and it was 3-2 at halftime.
The Barstow lead disappeared completely as Burroughs was given a penalty kick midway through the second, with Schiller completing the hat trick. The home team avoided the tie by scoring in the 26th minute. Sanchez laid a nice cross pass to Angelique Leatham, who picked the ball up and shot it into the left corner of the net.
The Lady Aztecs (7-5-3, 4-1-1) outshot their opponent (6-3-2, 1-2-2), 10-4.
Barstow will host Victor Valley on Thursday at 3 p.m.
