BARSTOW • Nearly 100 scholarships totaling more than $44,000 were awarded to current, incoming and outgoing Barstow Community College students Wednesday.

The annual Honors Day event, hosted by BCC and the Barstow College Foundation, took place inside the college’s James R. Parks Gymnasium.

“What we’d like to do is present our top students,” BCC Professor Ramon Vasconcellos, the master of ceremonies, told a crowd of about 100.

Afterward, various community members and officials took the stage to present the scholarships to students.

Awards ranged from $100 to $1,150. Some students were multiple winners and some scholarships were awarded to multiple students.

The event has gone on “in some form or fashion” for approximately 30 years, according to BCC spokeswoman Maureen Stokes.

The college, the college foundation and several community groups and members provide funds yearly for the awards.

Students were encouraged to apply for the scholarships in spring during a four-week application period, Stokes said.

While the criteria varied for each award, students were generally sought out for having good grades, she said.
