Gutierrez MA students compete and win
SAN DIEGO • On Aug. 24, eight members of the Gutierrez Martial Arts Studio in Barstow traveled to San Diego to compete in the AKA American Open Martial Arts Championships.
The Championships is one of the premier tournaments held in the U.S. There were competitors not only from California, but from Arizona, Colorado and New York, as well as Canada and Mexico. The tourney is AAA rated by NASKA (the North American Sport Karate Association). The students competed in empty hand forms, weapons forms, and point sparring.
There were five first-place finishes from the Barstow students. Daniel Zamora was first in intermediate forms and third in sparring, while Chad Lopez Zamora was first in forms and second in sparring. Mandy Dokie, a black belt, placed first in sparring and second in forms, with Trish Dennis also taking first in sparring and second in forms, while Zeah Flores was first in forms. Harmony Shoemake took second place in intermediate forms and sparring, and Marcos Bustamante was second in black belt forms.
