Former Laker Russell speaks at SAFE forum
Former NBA star and Los Angeles Laker Bryon Russell turns to address a panel on Monday at the Cora Harper Community Center.
Russell was the keynote speaker during the SAFE Coalition's community forum which highlighted issues surrounding local underage drinking and discussed the city's recently-adopted Social Host Ordinance.
"I was 60 miles from you guys, I made it," Russell, who grew up in San Bernardino, told an audience of approximately 100.
"Once I set my mind, I did it," he said. "Stay on course."
Prior to speaking and fielding questions from the crowd, Russell joked with the Desert Dispatch about his familiarity to Barstow.
"We used to come down here and beat (Barstow High) in basketball all the time."
Barstow Youth & Cheer, BHS and the City of Barstow also co-organized the event.
