Robbers hit Denny's, remain at large

STAFF WRITER

BARSTOW • Two men who robbed a local eatery earlier this week remain at large, and authorities are relying on the public to help nab them.

At about 12:50 a.m. Tuesday, Barstow Police Department officers were dispatched to the Denny’s restaurant at 1201 East Main St.

Lt. Mike Hunter said upon arrival officers were told that two men wearing masks, hooded jackets and gloves entered the business, took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled.

Witnesses told officers that one of the men displayed a handgun and demanded she open the cash register. The second man acted as a lookout, according to Hunter.

Witnesses said they saw both men flee on foot through the desert area north of the restaurant, Hunter said. He said officers conducted an “extensive search” of the area but the suspects escaped.

Hunter said the BPD has received some leads but is still depending on the public for more information that may lead to arrests.

“Anytime a robbery occurs where a suspect displays a handgun, those suspects are unpredictable and pose an unpredictable danger to the public,” Hunter said. “We do have some leads but it’s still an open investigation, and we will continue following up on additional leads. We’re asking for the public’s help with any additional information and we will immediately follow up on any new information.”

According to Hunter, the robber who demanded the money is believed to be a black man about 20 years old, standing about 5-foot-6 with a thin build. Hunter said the man who acted as lookout is believed to be a Hispanic man about 20 years old, with a medium build and thick, spiked hair.
