Duarte recognized as BUSD Teacher of the Year

STAFF WRITER

BARSTOW • Barstow High School social studies and history teacher Jim Duarte is the recipient of the district-wide 2012-13 Teacher of the Year Award.

Duarte was recognized during the Barstow Unified School District board meeting Tuesday evening and invited to be a candidate for the county and state programs for the 2012-13 California Teacher of the Year.

“We really benefit (with Duarte on staff),” BHS Principal Derrick Delton said Wednesday. “He keeps students actively engaged over the course of a full lesson. He not only teaches them about history, he teaches them about life.”

Delton explained that he, himself, was a student of Duarte’s in the late 1980s.

“I’m a testament to that (life-long learning), because some of the things I learned 25 years ago, I remember today,” he said.

Principals and staff from each BUSD school selected a teacher of the year winner for district-wide consideration.

In addition to Duarte from BHS, the winners were: Gloria Wardell, Central High; Trisha Baca, Barstow Junior High; Vivian Archer, Cameron Elementary; Mary Bilsborough, Crestline Elementary; Amanda Bourgeois, Henderson Elementary; Nichole Williams, Hinkley School; David Norman, Lenwood Elementary; Laura Webster, Montara Elementary; and Brent Leslie, Skyline Elementary.
