Marines bask in recognition, awards
BARSTOW • Two marines stationed at Marine Corps Logistics Base were honored on Tuesday at the Quarterly Military Awards Breakfast held at the Hampton Inn.
Lance Corporal Luis Castro and Sergeant Julio Tovar were both honored at the event held by the Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau.
Both Marines were recipients of $100, a night’s stay in a suite at the Hampton Inn, a certificate from the Barstow Chamber of Military Affairs and a certificate of recognition from Assemblyman Tim Donnelly.
Military Affairs Committee Chairman Derrell Kemp said this is the first time Donnelly has presented a certificate of recognition and his contribution to the “greater good is an honorable thing to do.”
Both Castro and Tovar agreed being recognized for their contributions to the Marine Corps was the most important aspect of being honored.
“I don’t work for awards; that just comes with the job,” said Tovar, who was awarded Noncommissioned Officer of the Month. “My main priority is my Marines and those working under me and those that work with me. The recognition is nice, it’s out of the ordinary. It lets us know people are watching and people do care about us.”
Tovar said he enjoyed receiving the money also because he is going to take his wife out to dinner and enjoy a night out.
Castro, the Marine of the Month, also enjoyed the money, but not as much as being recognized.
“The money is always great, but the recognition itself from the city of Barstow and the Assemblyman that allows me to think the community is involved with us and we can be involved with them as well,” Castro said.
