Mollie's Pub to hold fundraiser
8-year-old Barstow girl in need of heart transplant
BARSTOW • Numerous local residents and businesses are chipping in to raise funds for Xena Janelle Begay, an 8-year-old Barstow girl who needs a heart transplant.
A fundraiser will be held for Xena’s cause in Barstow on Friday, with a charity comedy show taking place at Mollie’s Pub from 7 to 9 p.m.
Xena’s mother, Veronica Renteria, is currently trying to raise funds for a new central air conditioning system in her home. The home currently has a swamp cooler installed, and Xena can’t be placed on the heart transplant list because of possible health risks caused by the current system.
The family has received more than $2,600 in donations from generous people on the Give Forward website, and Barstow-based H&B Refrigeration has offered to install the central air system, donating half of the job to Xena’s cause.
“They did already start some of the work they need to do,” Renteria said. “They want to finish this week and have her back on the list by the following week. So they’ll be contacting me and letting me know when the workers will be back out to finish.”
The Mommies Helping Mommies Fund and Baking for Charities collaborated to hold a bake sale Jan. 12 in Apple Valley.
“I just like helping people, and that’s what my group does; we help families in need,” said Wendy Wolf, manager at Mommies Helping Mommies.
