Memorial service scheduled for April Pitzer
NEWBERRY SPRINGS • A memorial service in Barstow is scheduled Sept. 21 for April Pitzer — the young woman who disappeared from Newberry Springs almost a decade ago and was declared legally dead in August 2012.
The service will be held at Mead Mortuary Funerals and Cremations on Irwin Road. A plaque of Pitzer will adorn a memorial wall there, according to Gloria Denton, Pitzer’s mother.
Denton needs help finding lodging during her 10-day stay, she said. The California Victim Compensation Program, which pays for things like funeral expenses and counseling, won’t cover it.
“Due to my being on disability,” she said, “I don’t have the funds.”
A non-profit organization called The Phoenix Foundation is paying her airfare, she said.
While she’s in the area, Denton will scope places of interest in hopes of finally finding her daughter. She said she plans to arrive Sept. 15 and stay through Sept. 24.
Pitzer’s story has captured national attention. The 30-year-old Arkansas native who lived in Newberry Springs went missing days before she was set to return home.
The memorial service will begin at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Mead Mortuary Funerals and Cremations is located at 36930 Irwin Rd.
