MLK Jr. Peace March set for Saturday

STAFF WRITER

BARSTOW • Martin Luther King Jr. will be honored with a local peace march, set to take place Saturday morning.

The annual Martin Luther King. Jr. peace march is organized yearly by the Art and Industrial Women’s and Men’s Club.

This year will mark the 17th edition of the march, which starts at the corner of Williams Street and Barstow Road, and proceeds up Barstow Road to the Cora Harper Fitness Center. The march begins at 10 a.m.

Parade organizer Mary Hailey said about 100 people attended last year’s march.

“Probably about 100 or so showed up last year,” Hailey said. “It just depends what people are doing. This is a three-day weekend for people.”

The theme for this year’s march is ‘Standing together as one to fight for equality.’

“Because of what he stood for,” Hailey said. “I believe that a lot of people think that it’s just for blacks, but he was for everyone. Equality for everybody, no matter  their creed or color.

“So people getting together and joining each other and coming together as one is what his vision was. People will look at your heart and not your outer body. So I think it’s something that we should celebrate each year. Just for people to be people with each other.”

The Art and Industrial Women’s and Men’s club will also be holding a Martin Luther King Jr. peace breakfast, on Monday, Jan. 20, at Sizzler on East Main Street.
