The Barstow High School wrestling team celebrates after taking fourth place at the Raymond Willimstein Wrestling Tournament.

Aztecs finish fourth in Ontario

ONTARIO • The Barstow High School wrestling team took part in another tournament, and though short-handed, placed in the top five.

The Aztecs grappled in the 12th Annual Raymond Willimstein Wrestling Tournament, held at Ontario High School this weekend. Barstow was fourth out of 24 teams with 141 points, behind San Marcos (209 points), San Clemente (195) and Brawley (168).

“We didn’t have as many scorers as some other teams,” said Aztecs coach Sam Barnhart. “We had eight, but we only brought 11 kids.”

Among those placings were three firsts. Dallas Hawes took the top spot at 113-pounds, Ryan Barela was first at 132-pounds, and heavyweight Kiler Holmeyer was also tops in his weight division.

“We had three champs and eight placers,” said Barnhart. “We wrestled probably the best we have all year. It’s definitely a positive we can take into our DSL (Desert Sky League) matches.”

The Aztecs had one wrestler take second place, Adam Valdez at 106-pounds. After teammate Hawes was first at 113-pounds, Jose Rubio Jr. finished third in the same weight division. Cody Perez was fifth at 138-pounds, and Dan Alfaro seventh at 120-pounds.

“Our performance this weekend was closer to what I like to see every time we step on the mat,” said Barnhart. “It’s good for our first DSL match this week, and good for the tournaments we have left.”

The Aztecs will kick off their league schedule against Burroughs at home on Wednesday, JV at 5 p.m., varsity at 6. Senior night is next Wednesday, when the Aztecs will host Victor Valley.
