Judokas win at Nikkei Games
LONG BEACH • Six Barstow judo students traveled to Long Beach on Aug. 11 to compete in the Nikkei Games Judo Tournament, held at the Pyramid Sports Complex.
Four of the Barstow judokas emerged as winners.
Setting the pace for Barstow was 6 year-old Paulo Valdez, who made a clean sweep of his age and weight division, earning him the gold medal. Also winning a gold was 16 year-old Reuben Jaramillo, who also won all of his matches in the 16 year-old boys division.
Eleven year-old Isaiah Ramirez was runner-up in the boys 11-12 year old division with three wins and one loss. Ramirez won a silver medal. Also bringing home hardware was 15 year-old Matthew Jaramillo, who finished in third place in his weight and age division, getting him a bronze medal.
Also competing but not placing in the top three were 8 year-old Jasmine Rosas and 7 year-old Allysabeth Jaramillo.
The Barstow judo students are trained by 8th degree black belt holder Ernest Smith.
