Man fatally struck by tractor trailer in Newberry Springs
NEWBERRY SPRINGS • A 41-year-old Inglewood man was killed after being struck by a tractor-trailer while standing on Interstate 15 over the weekend, according to a news release from the California Highway Patrol.
At approximately 7:20 on Oct. 25, the CHP received a report of a collision. Michael Hammonds Jr. was standing in the No. 3 lane of northbound I-15, just south of Alvord Mountain Road, when he was struck by the big rig, according to the release.
The 56-year-old driver was unable to stop the Peterbuilt truck or avoid striking Hammonds, the release stated.
Hammonds received medical attention before being pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.
The collision was still under investigation by the CHP; authorities were investigating the possibility that the pedestrian was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
