Barstow man pleads not guilty to attempted murder charge
VICTORVILLE • A Barstow man pleaded not guilty to an attempted murder charge on Tuesday at the Victorville courthouse after allegedly firing a gun at two people during an argument in Barstow over the weekend.
According to a news release by the Barstow Police Department, officers responded to a shots-fired call in the 1500 block of Piute Street at approximately 2:56 p.m.
When authorities arrived they learned an argument between two people resulted in Jason Stephens allegedly retrieving a handgun from a residence and firing several shots at two additional people, according to the release.
Authorities learned the victims were not struck by any bullets but a vehicle was hit several times, the release states.
Police officers detained and interviewed everyone at the scene and believe Stephens, 32, was the shooter.
The handgun used in the shooting was recovered along with additional evidence from the scene, according to the release.
Stephens was arrested on suspicion of attempting to commit murder, according to the release. He is a convicted felon who has been sentenced to state prison terms on several occasions, court records show.
He is next due in court on March 5, court records show.
Stephens is currently being held at High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto in lieu of $250,000 bail, booking records show.
