Man suspected of lewd act with minor
Pediatrician's office volunteer used patient records to find girls on Facebook, authorities say
BARSTOW • A volunteer at a local pediatrician’s office is scheduled to be arraigned Friday on suspicion he committed a lewd act with one of multiple underaged girls he allegedly contacted through Facebook.
Brandon Lopez, 20, obtained identifying information from girls’ patient medical records and then contacted them through the popular social media website, authorities said.
Investigators believe there could be multiple victims, some who may have been swayed by the suspect’s false claim that he was a paid-call firefighter with the Barstow Fire Protection District.
Lopez was arrested during a sting operation at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday near Second Avenue and Buena Vista Street, according to booking records.
He arrived at the location to meet who he thought was a 13-year-old girl he had spoken with through Facebook, according to a Barstow Police Department news release.
The girl’s fictitious Facebook profile had actually been created by investigators, according to the news release.
Barstow police launched an investigation into the suspect’s alleged activities Sept. 11.
A 12-year-old girl reported to her mother that Lopez had contacted her through Facebook and performed a lewd act on her during an in-person meeting, according to the news release.
On another occasion, police said Lopez tried to get the victim to come to his house for sex.
Lopez could face charges which include performing lewd acts with a child under 14 years old.
It’s not clear at which local pediatrician’s office he was a volunteer.
He is currently in custody at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga in lieu of $250,000 bail, booking records show.
He has no prior criminal history in San Bernardino County, according to court records.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact the Barstow Police Department at 760-256-2211 or Detective Keith Libby at 760-255-5134. Callers who wish to remain anonymous may contact the WE Tip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME.
