Small amount of mercury found in Newberry Springs

NEWBERRY SPRINGS — A small amount of mercury was found in Newberry Springs on Wednesday afternoon.

Edward Marquez said his wife called to tell him that she found mercury near the Interstate 40. Someone also made a report to the sheriff’s department.

Sgt. Doug Hubbard of the Barstow sheriff’s station said it was a small bottle of mercury. Somebody said there was more, but deputies did not recover any more, Hubbard said.

The matter was referred to San Bernardino County Fire Department Hazardous Materials team.
