Students from Gutierrez Martial Arts competed at the Desert Open Karate Championships in Banning.

Local karate students compete at Championships

BANNING • On July 20, four students from Barstow’s Gutierrez Martial Arts Studio traveled to Banning to compete in the annual Desert Open Karate Championships, held at Banning High School.

The event hosted martial arts schools from all around Southern California, as well as Arizona and Mexico.

Two of the Barstow students finished in first place, as Paula Gutierrez and Leila Gutierrez each placed first in their respective purple to blue belt, empty hand forms divisions. Eric Chavira and Marcos Bustamante competed in the men’s black belt divisions and each placed in two events. Chavira was second in weapons kata and third in empty hands, while Bustamante placed second in sparring and fourth in empty hands kata.

The Barstow students are now preparing for the prestigious AKA American Open Martial Arts Championships, to be held in San Diego Aug. 23 and 24.
