Local authorities nab suspect in infant's death
Man arrested on Greyhound for warrant in Washington
BARSTOW • Authorities arrested a man on a Greyhound bus in Barstow after they learned he was wanted for an infant’s death in Washington.
Jose L. Aguilar, 36, is suspected of killing his girlfriend’s 9-month-old daughter, law enforcement officials said.
Barstow police received a call Saturday from a Richland, Wash., detective who said the suspect was possibly passing through the area, according to a police news release.
An investigation determined that the suspect had ditched his vehicle and boarded a Greyhound bus.
California Highway Patrol officers located the bus at Barstow Station on 1611 E. Main Street, according to the news release.
CHP and police officers boarded the bus and located the suspect, who was taken into custody without incident, according to the news release.
The infant, Serenity Reedy of Richland, died Friday of “abusive head trauma,” according to Coroner John Hansens of the Benton County Coroner’s Office. The girl’s body was recovered at a mobile home park in Richland.
Hansens ruled the death a homicide and said Reedy suffered injuries to other areas of her body.
The infant’s mother, Jennifer Reedy, 31, had reported to police Friday morning that the infant stopped breathing, according to a report from the Tri-City Herald newspaper.
Aguilar is Jennifer Reedy’s boyfriend and Richland police believed he was headed to Mexico. Police called Aguilar and tracked him using the GPS on his cell phone, according to the Herald report.
Following his arrest, Aguilar was taken to the Barstow Police Department for follow-up investigation and then transported to West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, according to the police news release.
He was booked for the warrant out of Washington and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail as he awaits extradition, according to the news release.
