Barstow man killed in Lenwood
Las Vegas woman dies in separate crash
LENWOOD • A 25-year-old Barstow man was killed in a traffic collision in Lenwood on Friday, hours after a Las Vegas woman was killed in another crash near Baker.
Jeremy Hernandez was driving a 2014 Nissan Versa northbound on Lenwood Road when he crossed the double-yellow line and struck a 2013 Ford Focus head-on at approximately 6:25 p.m., California Highway Patrol spokesman Don Spiker said.
Responding medical personnel administered CPR to Hernandez at the scene and he was transported to Barstow Community Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 7:09 p.m., Spiker said.
The driver of the Ford Focus, a resident of El Paso, Texas, was flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center by Mercy Air with undisclosed injuries, according to Spiker.
Spiker said it is unclear if Hernandez tried to pass a vehicle or possibly fell asleep at the wheel, but he said drugs are alcohol are not suspected to be a factor in the collision
A separate fatal collision claimed the life of a 75-year-old woman Friday on Interstate 15, just south of Zzyzx Road near Baker.
At approximately 4:02 p.m., the driver of a 2004 Chevy Suburban lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons before it overturned into the open desert and came to a rest on its wheels, Spiker said.
Sylvia Miguel, of Las Vegas, was sitting in the right rear passenger seat and was ejected from the vehicle. Spiker said Miguel, 75, was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene by Baker EMS.
The driver and front passenger both suffered minor injuries and were transported to BCH, Spiker said.
Spiker said drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor as CHP is investigating the collision.
