Aztecs run in Lagoon Invitational
SANTA BARBARA • Getting his young team experience through participation in large meets is something first-year Barstow cross country coach Jimmy Ortiz wanted to do this season. He got his first chance last weekend.
The boys and girls Aztecs teams traveled to UCSB to take part in the Lagoon Invitational. Over 400 runners from 11 schools competed. In addition to Barstow, on hand was Dos Pueblos, Santa Barbara, Royal, San Marcos, Ventura, Templeton, Cabrillo, Carptinteria, Fillmore and Lompoc.
“I’m really proud of how the kids did,” said coach Ortiz. “They’re really coming along and dropping their times, some by as much as a minute since the season started.”
The overall boys champion at the Lagoon was San Marcos, which finished with a score of 38, with Ventura second with 40 points. Cabrillo (77) was next, followed by Dos Pueblos (115) and Santa Barbara (138). Barstow was sixth with 169 points.
The highest-placing Aztecs runner was Frankie Baca, who was 20th with a time of 17:28.67. Also finishing in the top 30 out of 254 runners were Zachary Rucker (28th, 17:43.66) and Geng-Wei Lee (29th, 17:43.89).
For the girls, Ventura took the top spot with 39 points, followed by Dos Pueblos (68), San Marcos (87), Templeton (92), and Cabrillo (112) rounding out the top five. Barstow was eighth with 276 points.
Evelin Mora was the first Lady Aztec to cross the finish line, placing 96th with a time of 24:03.60. Sarah Bamburg was 112th at 24:47.34, and Vanessa Miranda 123rd at 25:17.57.
The Barstow harriers will take part in the Yucaipa Invitational this weekend.
