Burroughs takes windy game from Lady Aztecs
RIDGECREST • The Lady Aztecs soccer team lost to Burroughs, 3-1, on Thursday.
Like the boys game, the wind played a part on Thursday for the Barstow girls.
“The wind was a big factor. One of their goals the wind put in,” said Lady Aztecs coach Frank Maldonado. “It should have been 1-0 at halftime.”
The Burros’ Zaylee Armstrong got her team’s first goal, in the 18th minute of the first half, with the second tally coming from Joelle Steichen with seven minutes left. Leah Ostermann scored in the 12th minute of the second half, to make it 3-0. With nine minutes left in the match, Barstow’s Alysia Sanchez kept her team from being shut out, scoring off an assist from Aubre Baker.
Barstow outshot its opponent, 10-9.
“The wind made it hard to control the ball, but we were flat today. We didn’t play our game,” said coach Maldonado. “The good news is, we didn’t gain any ground, but we didn’t lose any.”
The Lady Aztecs are 9-7-4, 6-3-2, and in second place in the Desert Sky League by two points. Granite Hills leads the league.
There are four games left in the regular season. Barstow is away at Victor Valley Tuesday, and at Adelanto next Thursday before finishing up with a pair of home games.
