Lady Aztecs finish 2-2 at tourney
HESPERIA • The Barstow girls basketball team wrapped up play in the Oak Hills Tournament with another win.
After defeating University Prep to earn their first victory of the season on Friday, the Lady Aztecs went 2-2 in tourney play by holding on to edge Silverado, 51-48, on Saturday at Oak Hills High School.
It was a close match the whole way, and may be a sign of what’s to come in the regular season for Barstow, as Silverado is also a member of the Desert Sky League. The two teams matched up well, and stayed within a few points of each other down to the final minute.
“We played a complete game today,” said Lady Aztecs coach Jerry Enriquez. “We held our composure and did great. I’m really proud of the girls.”
Both squads got off to a fast start, with Barstow holding a 17-11 lead after the first quarter. The Hawks had a strong second, and were ahead by one at halftime. Barstow made up that point in the third, leaving it all tied up at 39-apiece going into the fourth. The victors showed some good defense in the final quarter, holding the Hawks to nine points.
The Lady Aztecs’ Marion Mims picked up her third double-double of the tourney on Saturday, scoring 12 points and taking down 15 rebounds. Vasa Alefaio had seven points and 13 boards, while Kamrien Proctor had 10 points and seven steals. Jasmine Green had 13 points and seven steals, and Maxine Cooks five points and six blocks.
Barstow now has a record of 3-2. The first win came by forfeit, when Big Bear was unable to play on Nov. 26.
The Lady Aztecs next play this Thursday at Burroughs.
