Barstow motorcyclist killed in OC crash

SENIOR STAFF WRITER

GARDEN GROVE • A Barstow motorcyclist was killed this weekend in Garden Grove after he crashed into the back of another vehicle, authorities said.

Derek Williams, 28, was taken to University of California Irvine Medical Center in Orange and pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m., according to the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department.

Garden Grove Police and Fire units responded to the crash at the intersection of Springdale Street and Chapman Avenue at approximately 12:53 a.m.

Authorities discovered a motorcycle on its side with a large amount of debris on the roadway, according to Sgt. Fischer of the Garden Grove Police Department.

Investigators believe Williams, who was ejected and landed several feet from his motorcycle, had been traveling at a high rate of speed when he rear-ended a vehicle traveling in the same direction.

The occupants of the vehicle were uninjured, Fischer said.

The Coroners office and Garden Grove police are investigating.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Investigator Adam Zmija at 714-741-5847.
