Trojans run all over Saints
IRVINE • The Silver Valley football team started off its season with a rewarding road trip on Friday. The Trojans had staked themselves to a 28-0 lead by halftime, and went on to crush Crean Lutheran, 42-6, in a non-league match in Irvine.
Valley scored two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters.
“It was a great start for the kids,” said Trojans head coach John Stewart. “The returning players who we’re expecting a lot from did well, and the back-ups stepped up and played well, too. The kids played hard the whole game, they never let up.”
Three Trojans had two touchdowns apiece. Evan Martinez was 8-of-9 in passing for 140 yards, throwing two TD passes to Bailey Rettman. Rettman not only scored twice, he also had eight tackles and two interceptions. Brian Ili had a pair of touchdowns on six carries for 87 yards, while Dan Quixchan scored twice, and had seven carries for 169 yards.
Defensively, Quixchan had 10 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery; Ili had 14 tackles; and Dante Fields 18 tackles. James Liker was 6-for-6 in kicking extra points.
The Trojans’ domination may have been due in part to their no-huddle game plan, according to coach Stewart.
“We went the whole game without huddling; right after the tackle, we were lining up again,” he said. “By the second quarter, they were completely winded and we were still good to go.”
There was a running clock in the fourth.
“We only ran 30 plays, and they were back-to-back-to-back for the most part,” said Stewart. “It was a pretty quick game.”
Valley begins the 2013 season 1-0, with its next chance to defend its record coming this Friday. The Trojans will play the first of the year’s four home matches, hosting Hamilton at 7 p.m.
“This was a great start,” coach Stewart said. “Now that we know what we have to work on, we can build on this win.”
